Comets Have Best Lottery Odds for JuJu Watkins

LFG Houston news graphic: Houston Comets have the best odds in the 2027 WNBA Draft Lottery

The Houston Comets will enter their first WNBA Draft Lottery since returning to the league with the best odds to land the No. 1 pick. The 2027 lottery will air Sunday, Nov. 15, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. CT on ESPN, the WNBA announced Wednesday.

Houston and the Toronto Tempo are tied for the top odds, each with a 32.9% chance at the first pick, according to The Associated Press and CBS Sports. The Comets are guaranteed a top-three pick.

Comets Can’t Fall Below No. 3

Lottery odds for most teams are based on combined records from the last two seasons. The Comets, who played as the Connecticut Sun, went 22-66 in 2025 and 2026, a .250 winning percentage. Toronto, a 2026 expansion team, went 11-33 in its only season, also .250. Expansion teams Toronto and Portland are judged on their 2026 records alone.

Because the two teams finished with identical percentages, each receives 329 of the 1,000 lottery combinations. Houston went 1-2 against Toronto in 2026, the first tiebreaker, so the Comets can fall no further than third. Toronto is guaranteed at least the fourth pick.

How the Draw Works

Fourteen balls numbered 1 through 14 go into a lottery machine, and four are drawn to make a four-digit combination, per the league. The team holding that combination gets the No. 1 pick. The balls go back in and the process repeats for No. 2. The five remaining teams then pick third through seventh in order of worst record. WNBA head of league operations Bethany Donaphin will reveal the results, and an Ernst & Young representative oversees the drawing. This is the 26th annual WNBA Draft Lottery.

JuJu Watkins Leads Early Mock Drafts

Early projections have USC guard JuJu Watkins going first overall. In a pre-lottery mock draft published Oct. 27, ESPN’s Michael Voepel slotted Watkins to Houston at No. 1, as did CBS Sports. Both are projections only, since the lottery has not been held. The 6-foot-2 Watkins missed last season after tearing her ACL in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

Both mocks projected Texas forward Madison Booker to go No. 2 to Toronto. ESPN’s mock had Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo at No. 3 to Washington.

ESPN also pointed out a link to the original Comets: when the franchise launched in 1997, its star was Cynthia Cooper, another USC guard.

The Comets’ Return

The WNBA and NBA Boards of Governors unanimously approved the sale and relocation of the Sun to Houston for the 2027 season, the team announced. Fertitta Entertainment owns the team, which will play at Toyota Center. The original Comets won the WNBA’s first four championships, and the franchise’s records and history carry forward.
