If you grew up in Houston, the Astros aren’t just a baseball team. They’re summer nights, traffic on 59, and that feeling when the roof’s closed and the place is shaking. Before we get into hot takes and game-by-game stuff on LFG Houston, here’s the quick story of how we got here.
It started with the Colt .45s
Houston got Major League Baseball in 1962 as an expansion team in the National League. The original name? The Houston Colt .45s. They played outdoors in the Texas heat for their first few seasons, which tells you everything you need to know about how tough that early fan base was.
The Astrodome changed everything
In 1965 the team moved into the Astrodome and became the Astros, a nod to Houston’s place in the space program. The Dome got called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” and for a lot of us it’s still the building that defines Houston sports. Indoor baseball was a wild idea at the time. Houston did it first.
Downtown and a new home
The Astros moved downtown in 2000 to the ballpark with the retractable roof and the train in left field. It opened as Enron Field, became Minute Maid Park in 2002, and starting in 2025 it’s officially Daikin Park. Same yard, same train, new name on the front.
Pennants, a league switch, and two rings
Houston made its first World Series in 2005, still as a National League club. In 2013 the Astros moved to the American League West, and a few years later the city got what it had been waiting decades for: a World Series title in 2017. They added another one in 2022. Between those, the Astros also won AL pennants in 2019 and 2021, so this team has been a regular in October.
Why it matters for LFG Houston
That’s the backdrop for everything we cover here. When we talk about the rotation, the lineup, or what a trade means, we’re talking about a team with real history and a fan base that expects to win. Expect honest takes from fans who actually watch the games, not recycled headlines.
