Tank Dell Is Back: Texans WR Set to Return

Twenty-two months. That’s how long Houston has waited to see Nathaniel “Tank” Dell run out of the tunnel in a Texans uniform for a real game. On Monday, DeMeco Ryans made it official: Dell will be activated off injured reserve and is set to play Sunday against the New York Giants in Week 7.

For a fan base that watched one of the most electric young receivers in the league go down twice in back-to-back seasons, this one hits different.

The Rookie Year That Made Houston Believe

Dell came to Houston as a third-round pick out of UH in 2023, a Daytona Beach, Florida, native listed at 165 pounds who a lot of people said was too small for the league. He didn’t care. Paired with fellow rookie C.J. Stroud, Dell became an instant big-play threat, piling up 709 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 games.

Then came Week 13 against Denver. Dell suffered a fractured fibula and was done for the season, right as the Texans were making their playoff push. Houston still won the AFC South, but every fan knew the offense was missing a piece.

A Scary Offseason and a Second Setback

The 2024 offseason brought a frightening moment away from football when Dell was struck by a stray bullet as a bystander at an event in Sanford, Florida. He was not the target, and he was able to return to the team. He suited up for the 2024 season and kept producing alongside Stroud and Nico Collins.

Then came Dec. 21, 2024, in Kansas City. In Week 16 against the Chiefs, Dell went down with a devastating knee injury: multiple torn ligaments, including the ACL, and a dislocated kneecap. It was the kind of injury that ends careers. He missed the rest of that season and all of 2025.

The Long Road Back

The return didn’t happen overnight. Dell practiced throughout 2026 training camp but was limited to individual drills because he wasn’t fully cleared for contact, and the Texans opened the season with him on injured reserve. His practice window opened about two weeks ago, and per ESPN he has practiced with no setbacks since.

Through all of it, he says his mindset is gratitude.

“I’m blessed,” Dell said, via ESPN. “I want to thank God for getting me back in this position. But I don’t think I’m overwhelmed. I’m anxious, of course, but I don’t think I’m overwhelmed. I’m anxious to get back out there and play some football.”

And if you’re wondering whether he’s worried about that first hit, he isn’t.

“I know it’s a lot of questions, like, ‘How he gonna look when he gets tackled?’” Dell told ESPN. “I don’t care about none of that. I’m ready to get tackled. I’m gonna be joyful. Y’all gonna see the passion I have after I had that first catch.”

That’s Tank. That’s the energy Houston has been missing.

What DeMeco Ryans Is Saying

Ryans has been clear that there’s no pressure on Dell to put up big numbers in his first game back.

“Tank is doing an outstanding job these past two weeks of practicing. We are all excited and we’ll see Tank out there on Sunday vs. the Giants,” Ryans said, via HoustonTexans.com. “We’re excited, it’s time for him to be back. He’s done a great job of working to get himself back.”

He also says the speed is still there, and the Texans’ own defense has noticed.

“As we all know, Tank is an explosive player. He’s still quick as ever,” Ryans said, via HoustonTexans.com. “He’s going to stress defenders and you add them in a mix with all of the other guys that we have.”

Asked about a snap count, Ryans kept it simple.

“For me, it’s getting Tank back out there after missing two years of football. That’s the main thing, like him just going out playing ball. I don’t care how many reps he gets. But I’ll have my Tank Dell jersey on Sunday,” Ryans said, via Texans Wire.

When your head coach is wearing your jersey on game day, you know what you mean to the building.

Where Dell Fits in This Offense

Dell is coming back to a much deeper receiver room than the one he left. Nico Collins is still WR1, and Houston has added Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaylin Noel, Xavier Hutchinson and Kayshon Boutte. That depth means the Texans don’t need to rush him. They can use him in spots, let him win with speed and route-running, and build up his workload week by week.

The timing matters too. Houston is 2-4, but it’s coming off a divisional win over first-place Jacksonville in London, and Stroud was just named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Adding a healthy Tank Dell to that mix could give this offense another gear for the second half of the season.

The Bottom Line

Keep expectations reasonable for Sunday. Two years is a long time, and the first game back is about getting comfortable again, not about stats. But whether it’s one catch or six, the moment Tank Dell takes that first hit and pops back up, H-Town is going to be loud.

Welcome back, Tank. Houston missed you.
