The Houston Comets showed off their new look Thursday night, unveiling a new logo and brand at a launch party at POST Houston downtown. The event was hosted by KHOU 11 meteorologist Chita Craft and streamed by KHOU 11, the team’s official media partner.

The primary mark is a slanted navy “H” filled with stars, with a basketball forming the crossbar and a comet tail streaking off it. A circle version wraps “HOUSTON COMETS” around that H in a red ring, and two wordmarks reading “HOUSTON” and “COMETS” carry the same basketball-comet and stars design.
A Nod to the Original Comets
The new H updates the original team’s alternate “H” logo, which also featured a large H filled with stars and a basketball with a comet trail wrapping through it, the Houston Chronicle reported. That mark appeared on hats, jerseys and merchandise alongside the classic “COMETS” wordmark, whose basketball comet became one of the WNBA’s best-known looks.
The original Comets were one of the WNBA’s eight founding teams in 1997 and won the league’s first four championships, from 1997 through 2000, behind Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. The franchise folded after the 2008 season.

Logos Surfaced a Day Early
The designs became public before the party. On Wednesday, the WNBA filed eight trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office covering four designs, according to Front Office Sports. The filings, first spotted by trademark attorney Josh Gerben, did not include colors. The team has used its classic dark blue and red in recent advertising.
The Comets name itself is still in a trademark dispute. A company called TSTM Holdings applied for the name in 2024 after the original trademark lapsed, and the WNBA filed in 2025. The USPTO has not granted the rights to either side, so the team can keep using the name.
What’s Next
Owner Tilman Fertitta bought the Connecticut Sun and is moving the franchise to Houston, where the Comets will play at Toyota Center starting in the 2027 season. Games will air free over the air on KHOU 11 and Quest 55.
Before then, Houston could land the No. 1 pick in the 2027 WNBA Draft. The Comets are tied with the Toronto Tempo for the best odds in the Nov. 15 lottery, a 32.9% chance at the top pick, and can fall no lower than third. Early mock drafts from ESPN and CBS Sports project USC guard JuJu Watkins to go first overall. Read more on the Comets’ shot at JuJu Watkins.
