Houston went five seasons without an NFL team. If you lived through that, you remember how much Sundays felt off. The Texans fixed that, and the city has been all in ever since. Here’s the short version of the story.
The gap after the Oilers
The Oilers left for Tennessee after the 1996 season. That left the fourth-largest city in the country without pro football. In 1999 the NFL awarded Houston an expansion franchise, and the Houston Texans were on the way.
A first game nobody forgot
The Texans kicked off in 2002, and they couldn’t have scripted the opener any better. On September 8, 2002, in the first regular-season game in franchise history, Houston beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-10. Beating Dallas in your very first game? That’s how you win over a city.
Home field
The team has played at the same stadium since day one. It opened as Reliant Stadium and has been NRG Stadium since 2014, with a retractable roof that comes in handy in Houston weather. It’s also hosted two Super Bowls, which says a lot about the building.
